At Tynsel Parkes CE Primary Academy, we aim to develop a lifelong love and passion for reading by sharing a wide range of high quality texts and genres with the children. It is our goal that when children leave Tynsel Parkes the children will all be enthusiastic, confident readers ready for the next stage of their education.
The teaching of reading in our academy is consistently planned through the use of the systematic, synthetic phonics programme: Letters and Sounds.
Letters and Sounds is a phonics resource published by the Department for Education and Skills in 2007. It aims to build children's speaking and listening skills in their own right as well as to prepare children for learning to read, by developing their phonic knowledge and skills. It sets out a detailed and systematic programme for teaching phonic skills for children starting by the age of five, with the aim of them becoming fluent raders by age seven.
Through our daily letters and sounds programme we teach your child 42 phonemes.
Please listen to the video to hear the pure sounds for each phoneme.
Our Reading Books
We encourage children to read a wide and varied range of texts, both fiction and non-fiction, enjoying reading both at home and at school. The reading books will enable children to practice and apply their reading knowledge and skills. We have invested in a fully-decodable reading scheme which is book banded and in line with age related expectations (EYFS, KS1 and KS2). The books have explicit links the Letters and Sounds phases ensuring the children are able to read independently, gaining in confidence and fluency. We use the Collins ‘Big Cat’ scheme as the main reading scheme for the children and supplement with other high quality texts that feed directly into the book banding system. The way that our books are organised is vital to the way we teach our children to read. Tynsel Parkes is very fortunate to have a lovely library that children can take books home to share with their families and friends.
